Common Causes of Homeowner Headaches and How to Prevent Them

Every homeowner has a list of stuff that needs to be addressed. Most of the time, that list can take months if not years to get to and as soon as you cross one thing off another thing pops up.

So if you have a free weekend, or maybe you just moved in, there are a few items that you should look for right away, and correct, before they can become big problems.

Washing Machine

Your washing machine may not seem all too important of a fix until it’s flooding your laundry room with soapy water. There are numerous reasons a washing machine could fail, but most commonly the reason is due to a bad hose. You should inspect your washing machine hoses frequently to catch a problem before it arises. Usually, the problem occurs with a faulty coupling, but the hose itself can also become damaged. A rip or tear in the hose will eventually get bigger until the hose splits wide open and water is pumped all over the floor. Replacing a hose now for a few bucks can save you thousands in the future.

Basement Water Leaks

If you get water in your basement often, then that should be a problem that is addressed right away especially if your basement leaks when it rains. Rain isn’t something that you can control, but the integrity of your basement is. Often, the cause of the leaks are cracks in the home’s foundation, which can be identifiers of bigger problems. Hiring a foundation repair company can be a simple solution to getting rid of leaks and improving the integrity of your home. If you don’t see any cracks, but yet your basement leaks when it rains, then consider water proofing solutions or a sump pump. A submersible sump pump can last up to 15 years.

Sliding Door

If you have a sliding door that is starting to become difficult to open, then it’s probably caused by an obstruction in the track. Take a moment to clean out the track thoroughly and lubricate any mechanisms to ensure an easily opened door. If the problem persists, consider changing out the track itself — a much easier and less expensive process than replacing the door.

Home improvement starts with making the effort to fix the little things. The more you stay on top of stuff, the shorter your list will be and the less you’ll have to do in the future.
