4 Types Of Coatings Used to Waterproof a Basement

If your basement is finished or if you spend a lot of time down there, you probably don’t want it to be cold and damp. Some people may be in the situation where their basement floods a lot, and they have to worry about drying out the area within 24 to 48 hours after flooding.

Waterproof basements are an investment, and they’re well worth it if you plan to spend a lot of time down there. Companies who specialize in waterproof basements will come to your home and coat the walls and floors with one to four types of coating. These coatings are as follows.

The first type of coating they may use is a concrete waterproof coating . This coating is very thick but adheres permanently to concrete once it is dry. This coating is applied using a heavy brush and is swirled at the final stage of application to give it a really interesting look. It can’t be applied to surfaces that have already been painted, so keep that in mind when you’re looking to have a waterproof basement.

The next type of coating is a densifier . A densifier can go on any wall that hasn’t been painted or sealed in the past. This sealer mixes and with the ingredients of the walls and forms the waterproof surface. Unfortunately, these type of sealers can peel as they aren’t a penetrating coating. You can paint over them, but check with the person who applied the coating first to be sure.

The third type of coating is waterproof paint. This one isn’t used as much by the professionals as it is by a homeowner looking to DIY their waterproof basement. It’s pretty similar to wall paint, as you can spray, roll, brush it on to any surface. That being said, most professionals wouldn’t recommend this as a permanently effective solution.

The final type of coating is a plastic sheet or a panel . these can be used to waterproof a basement, but only if they are being used in combination with an interior basement drainage system. The plastic sheets and panels aren’t able to prevent water from getting through the wall, but they can prevent the items in your basement from being ruined.

If you’re interested in having your basement waterproofed, take a look at the types of coatings listed above and decide which one would work best for you and your basement. Talk to your foundation repair services about what you want and they can guide you in the right direction.
