A wet basement can be a huge headache for any homeowner. Of all homes with basements, over 98% will experience some type of water damage and require foundation repair services. In order to prevent that from happening, it is important to keep your eye out for signs of water damage in your home. Here are three reasons why water damage to your foundation is more serious than you might think.

  1. Electrical damage – Everyone knows that water and electricity do not mix, so it is imperative that any electrical appliances or boxes are kept out of harm’s way. If water gets into your basement and finds an electrical source, the damage could be catastrophic. So make sure to unplug any electrical appliances, or move them to a safer location, if it rains.
  2. It creates mold – Mold is a toxic substance that thrives in wet environments. And where there is mold, there will be bacteria and mildew that can cause respiratory problems for your family. Mold can be incredibly hard to get rid of, and to ensure it does not come into your home you can invest in quality foundation sealing. But if you do have a wet basement , make sure to clean and dry it out within 24 to 48 hours after flooding to prevent mold growth.
  3. Your house could be in danger – Water damage in your home can put your entire house at risk. Even though your foundation seems solid, it can be quite fragile. Any water that enters it can cause cracks and weaken the entire structure. If you notice cracks in your foundation that are more than one-fourth of an inch wide, you should take measures to fix it as soon as possible.

Additionally, water has the ability to wear away at wood and plaster in your home. This could be dangerous, as it can cause walls and ceilings to collapse when you least expect it.

If you notice that you have a wet basement, make sure to call a basement waterproofing company right away. Expert foundation repair contractors will fix any damage and take the necessary steps to prevent water from coming back in. After working with them, you’ll have a cozy, dry basement once again.
