Water is everyone’s best friend or worst enemy. Have a love-hate relationship with water because it seeped through your home and is now causing you to invest some time in home improvement? Follow these water proofing solutions for each part of your house to ensure that water won’t come in and make any more surprise visits.

It starts with your gutters.

The number one concern for homeowners when it comes to water proofing solutions should be how to efficiently direct water away from the house. This can easily be done with angling your gutters away from your foundation and making sure they are cleaned regularly. If dirt, debris, and leaves accumulate, then the collected water has nowhere to go but up which can cause potential ice dams in the wintertime. And if the gutters are pointed too closely to the foundation of your house, the water will seep into the foundation causing cracks and a wet basement.

Roof

Since your roof is exposed to all the elements, it is important to take every effort to waterproof it to keep it from leaking. If it is time to replace your roof then the first step you must take is to install a solid waterproofing material between the shingles and rafters, such as tar paper or roofing felt.

But if your shingles are showing wear but do not necessarily need replacing, the best option is to spray, roll, or brush on a waterproofing compound directly. These sprays restore the original waterproofing oils and resins that are found in new shingles. Be aware, though, that this method will not work if you do not have a waterproof under layer below the shingles.

Double check for loose or missing shingles as this will expose the underlayer to wind and sunlight, which can deteriorate the under layer.

Basement

Within seconds, a dry, cozy basement can become a flooded mess. If this happens, be sure first to check for any foundation cracks. If they are more than a quarter of an inch wide, then measures need to be taken for foundation sealing. More often than not, repairing cracks in foundation walls will stop the accumulation of basement leaks.

Another home waterproofing quick fix is to slope any soil and plants away from your house; this should angle at least six inches for every 10 feet at the very least. Doing this will prevent the natural flow of water from running inwards towards your basement.
Installing a sump pump is another waterproofing method. These handy appliances will prevent the gradual build up of water through depositing it into the house’s waste water system. When installed properly and kept free of debris, pedestal sump pumps last 25 to 30 years while submersible sump pumps last between five to 15 years.
