Summer Rains Pose Risk to Basements and Home Foundations

Summer should be a time for soaking up the sun by the pool and relaxing. However, residents of many areas across America caught between a spring that saw heavy snow melts and a summer where flash floods haven’t been uncommon are finding a different reality. However, residents of many areas across America caught between a spring that saw heavy snow melts and a summer where flash floods haven’t been uncommon are finding a different reality.

The Chicago metropolitan area hasn’t been immune to these heavy rainfalls, which can cause basement water leaks and floods — and subsequent water damage — to a home’s foundation.

According to a CBS Chicago article, the suburb of Bellwood faced heavy water damage as flash floods waterlogged streets and basements on August 4.

Last month, similar flooding hit the community of La Grange as three rain storms hit within days of each other, overwhelming the town’s drainage and sewage systems and filling basements with water, according to a July 15 Chicago Tribune  article.

And on July 12, heavy rains even closed down the Taste of Chicago festival for the day — the first time this has happened since 1980, CBS Chicago reported.

If you notice that your basement leaks when it rains, this is a likely sign that your foundation is at risk for water damage. To prevent further, more expensive damage to your home, experts recommend hiring foundation repair contractors to fix these basement leaks with a basement water proofing procedure.

Some common signs of water damage include cracks and water lines in a basement’s walls and frequent puddles and moisture appearing in a basement.

And if left alone, water damage on your home’s foundation can result in thousands of dollars of damage, mold growth and eventually a slow deterioration of your home’s entire structure.

So this summer, be sure to protect the investment that is your home with the right basement water proofing procedure.
