If you never got the opportunity to have your basement waterproofed, you might find one day that the entire floor has been flooded. This will damage your property and potentially pose a health hazard if not attended to properly, especially if you have carpeting or furniture in your basement. First, take the necessary safety precautions. If there is anything plugged in, unplug it immediately. Next, remove all property you have from the flood. This will aid in the prevention of mold growth. Now you need to try to determine the source of the leak. If you don’t have a sump pump, it is likely that water has come in through cracks in the foundation, or through a window, in the wake of a heavy rain or flooded body of water.

If you do have a sump pump and have had heavy rain before without a problem, it is possible that it has malfunctioned in some way. If you believe this is the case, the only method of getting rid of the water, for the time being, is by using buckets and towels. Perhaps if you have a wet/dry vacuum and an extension cord that will allow you to plug it in upstairs where it is safe, this could work as well. Either way, time is of the essence. Mold growth can begin shortly after a flood, so it is recommended to have your basement dry within 24 to 48 hours. Dehumidifiers and fans will certainly help you in this endeavor.

No matter how your basement came to be flooded, it is important to know the steps to minimize damage. The best way to ensure that there is no damage is by taking preventative measures and making the necessary basement foundation repairs and sump pump upgrades. In the long run, it will save you time, money, and so much unnecessary stress.
