Working with Your Insurance When Dealing with Water Damage

No homeowner ever wants to see water enter their home. From mold growth, ruined carpets, and damaged furniture to disintegrating drywall and electrical damage, water can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. To prevent water damage from entering your home and then having to deal with a wet basement, it is important to understand where the […] The post 4 Culprits Behind Water Damage in Your Home appeared first on .

Here are some common culprits behind basement water leaks.

Gutters and downspouts

A home’s gutters are often overlooked by the owner, but ignoring them for too long can become quite a problem. If gutters are not cleaned out regularly, water can overflow off the sides and pool near your foundation. Plus, if the downspouts are not fitted with the right angle, water can easily fall back on your foundation line. As a rule of thumb, each downspout should angle half an inch of fall for every 10 feet of gutter pipe.

A bad sump pump

If you have a full basement, chances are you have a sump pump. These handy guys help to pump water out of your basement and are quite the simple home waterproofing technique. However, these pumps don’t last forever. On average, a submersible sump pump will last between five and 15 years, but they can silently break down without you even knowing it. Contacting a foundation repair company for bi-annual maintenance checks is the best way to ensure your sump pump stays in great condition.

Your foundation lacks the proper drain

Some basements are so deep in the ground that they will take on water no matter what foundation sealing methods are used. In this case, it is a good idea to invest in a french drain, which is a group of drain pipes buried far underground, collecting groundwater via gravel and perforation in the pipes. With these pipes in the way, water is unable to infiltrate the foundation.

Your plants could be to blame

The soil around your home should always slope away about three inches for every foot planted. This way the water cannot pool around the foundation and push into the cement, causing cracks that grow larger by the minute.
