Want to DIY Your Basement Waterproofing

Simply put, no homeowner wants to have water in their home where it doesn’t belong. The majority of all water will trickle down to the foundation, causing not only a wet basement and the need for repairing a cracked foundation but a gigantic headache.

Not removing wet items immediately

Whenever there is a flood, you will want to remove stagnant water as soon as possible. This includes any organic items such as bedding, towels, and upholstery that may have been damaged in the process. Doing so will cut down on the risk of mold forming — and remember, mold can form even if you don’t see it!

Using caulk for repairing foundation cracks

Many homeowners believe that using caulk is an easy fix for these cracks, and while it may provide a temporary solution, it will not last. A foundation needs to be filled with injection epoxy resin for a permanent solution instead of just masking the problem.

Believing gimmicks

There are plenty of commercials and advertisements out there promoting the benefits of using things such as waterproof paint or one-coat sealant that will fix even the largest of foundation cracks. Yet again, these products may provide immediate gratification, but you are better off calling a foundation repair service for quality results immediately as they won’t last for long.

Planting too close to the foundation

Just because your landscaping is outside doesn’t mean it doesn’t impact what is going on inside! One of the easiest ways to prevent water from seeping into your home is to slope your plants at least six inches for every ten feet. This will ensure the roots grow away from the concrete foundation, and the water doesn’t slope down into the home when it rains or snows.

While DIY solutions can be helpful at first, keep these mistakes in mind to ensure a warm, dry basement at all times!
